Is it really any more asinine than, say, Jews seeking reparations from Nazis and Swiss banks, or Koreans seeking reparations from Japanese?
The only issue in my mind is that it seems like there is a tendency to use "black" as a proxy for "slave", when, in fact. some blacks during those days were never slaves, and some, in fact, even owned slaves.
If it's used as a way for black people, in general, to get money from white people, in general, that's asinine. Many white people in America these days are descended from people who didn't even live here during slavery days, and the same for some blacks.
On the other hand, my own ancestors owned many slaves. I don't really know what happened after the Civil War, my family was never big on family history. I found out doing research in places like the census and other old records. We didn't have much more than the proverbial pot after the Great Depression, though. |
