>The hard quantifiable fact is that the "peaceful majority" the "silent majority" is cowed and extraneous.
Sounds a lot like Canadians. I quite agree with the sentiment that one fanatic in our country is a fanatic too many, and that is true regardless or race or ethnicity. We've got too many Tamil fanatics, Sikh fanatics, Muslim fanatics, and yes even Jewish and Christian fanatics, not to say that fanaticism is typical in any of those groups.
The next question is, how to deal with these fanatics. One issue is that an immigration system that allows in large numbers of people from troubled and corrupt areas of the world is bound to leak in some degree of fanaticism and corruption. One has to question whether multiculturalism is something to be promoted, and whether we really need to be accepting large numbers of immigrants at all if they are going to lead to ethnic and religious factioning of our political systems, and draw us into conflict internally or externally. Indications are that in recent years immigrants have ceased to be the economic boost to our country that they once were, and with the other problems we are now experiencing one has to wonder whether we are not already about as diverse as we can handle.
Another thing to realize is that not all radicals are marching in the streets or secretly planning mayhem. Some own our newspapers and buy the allegiance of our politicians. On one side of the spectrum we have the Toronto Star which sometimes leads one to think that Canada only exists to serve the interests of multicultural communities and foreigners, and on the other end we have the National Post that would have us believe that our country is obliged to support some sort of war on the Islamic world on behalf of right-wing fanatics in Israel and their neo-Con friends closer to home. I reject both ideas.
Some suggestions to those who don't like radical voices trying to push Canadians to do things against our collective interests: 1) Let your MPs know that you support the idea that immigration is a privilege and not a right, and that it should come with obligations to support Canadian values of equality, freedom, and abandoning support for conflicts in other parts of the world, with recourse to deport in the event that the system fails to filter people properly. 2) If your newspaper is publishing editorials that put the interests of foreigner interest groups before the interests of Canadians, tell them to shove it. |
