WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Florida Gov. Charlie Crist Friday named his former chief of staff George LeMieux to replace retiring Republican U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez for the final year of his Senate term, according to a statement released by Martinez's office.

Martinez announced earlier in the year that he wouldn't seek re-election in 2010 when his six-year term expired, but then shortly before the Senate broke for its August recess, he announced he was resigning with immediate effect. Martinez gave no reason for why he was quitting early.

This left Crist in a somewhat difficult position, as he has already said he plans to run in next year's election to replace Martinez. In selecting LeMieux, Crist can likely be assured that his former aide won't run against him in the contest next year. LeMieux managed Crist's campaign for governor in 2006 and then served as chief of staff for a year in 2007, before returning to the private sector to resume his legal career.

Facing Crist in next year's election will be Democratic U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, but first Crist must overcome the challenge of state Rep. Marco Rubio in a Republican primary.
