I don't think people fear death as much as they fear ceasing to exist.

I believe those are two different things, and I'm not sure that "fear" is the appropriate word to describe the second. I think "total aversion" might come nearer. Everyone accepts that death is inevitable, but no one wants to stop living if they can possibly help it (well, almost no one).

I was reading about some research on how people behave in death threatening situations, such as survivable air crashes. The conclusion was that 95% will act to save themselves even if it means pushing ahead of others or trampling on them, or even abandoning loved ones. It seems that the instinct for survival trumps all else in most cases.
