Tuesday March 25 8:32 AM EDT C-Cube First to Receive Dolby Digital Certification for Integrated MPEG 2 Audio/Video DVD Decoder Products

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 25, 1997-- C-Cube Microsystems Inc , the leader in digital video compression technology, announced today that C-Cube's ZiVA DVD decoders are the first integrated MPEG 2 audio/video decoder products to be recognized as Dolby Digital 6-channel compliant after thorough testing at Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco, Calif. Originally known as AC-3, Dolby Digital is the first perceptual coder designed specifically to code multichannel digital audio.

"We are truly excited to be delivering the first Dolby Digital compliant integrated audio/video solution in the industry," said Alex Balkanski, president and CEO of C-Cube Microsystems.

C-Cube has been working closely with Dolby Laboratories since 1995 to ensure the highest quality performance and full compliance for the 6-channel surround sound of the Dolby Digital specification in its integrated decoder product line.

"Dolby Digital certification is important to manufacturers," said Larry Poor, director of technology marketing for Dolby Laboratories. "As consumer electronics and PC manufacturers incorporate C-Cube technology into their products, more consumers will be able to enjoy the high-quality digital sound available on formats such as DVD."

Dolby Digital was designed to allow the use of lower data rates with a minimum of perceived degradation of sound quality. The specification provides "5.1" discrete channels of audio -- five full frequency channels: Left, Center, Right, Left Surround, Right Surround, and a Low Frequency Effects -- LFE -- channel. Dolby Digital has been adopted as the mandatory multichannel standard for DVD in NTSC television countries, such as the United States and Japan, and has been adopted as the multichannel audio format for High Definition and Standard Definition digital television broadcasting in the United States.

Dolby Laboratories has certified C-Cube's ZiVA DVD decoder family for Dolby Digital. The ZiVA DVD decoders are the world's most highly-integrated single-chip DVD system decoders, incorporating eight critical DVD functions into a single engine. Based on C-Cube's programmable video architecture, ZiVA allows consumer electronics manufacturers and PC OEMs to develop full-featured DVD players and PC add-in cards that are fully compliant.
