You know I'm not exactly a major apologist for organised religion <gg>... but you're being too kind. You should be asking 'How exactly is it that money helps a person get over this?' - only or otherwise... not that I expect anyone would ever give the answer "well, it's not, but I get a new DVD and a Gamecube for the kids".
But such would be amusingly honest!
