Do you know what is strange about beauty? We see beauty completely differently depending upon where we live. There is that tribe of people where they stretch their lips out with discs. I know they find that really beautiful. But I find it ugly. I find almost everything permanently done to the body ugly. I don't like mutilation, I'm not sure why. I don't like scarification. I don't like extended necks or ears or lips or bound feet. I don't like body piercing. In fact all those things repulse me. Isn't it strange that standards of beauty could be so different? I don't find bony fashion models beautiful. They just don't look healthy, and health and vitality are part of beauty for me.

So if beauty is this subjective (if you agree that it is) what are we to make of anything surmised from human choices to see beauty? I won't even go into art, where tastes vary even more than they do in body adornment. And music! My goodness, the diversity there is amazing. I can't stand some music. It sounds like the cats I hear fighting on my back fence. Yet there are people who find music that sounds horrible to me, beautiful. And I suppose there are people who would find my favorite music horrible. Whatever wiring we are born with to discriminate between the beautiful and the ugly is capable of being modified by the society in which we find ourselves I think. I can't draw much of a conclusion from that.
