Alan, I saw a 3D-IMAX in Montreal and I could go on for an hour about my impressions. First I must tell you that I've been a video camera operator since 1968 so my observations are a mixture of professional and simple viewer. I was totally enthrolled in the VISUAL experience. Like any other 3D experience you have the sensation of nearness and distance. Added to this however, was the periferal(sp?) vision that such a big screen provided. Amazing. There are, however, some perseptual problems that broke the spell. We have all grown up in a world where we get visual cues to help us make judgements about distance and size of objects. As an object gets closer to us our eyes start coming closer together in order to focus on the same point of the object with both eyes. The physical sensation I had betrayed the size of the object. My senses were telling me that the person should be larger than I was seeing. This limited the completeness of the illusion. I don't mean to get analytical about this experience, but it was the only technical flaw that I found. But it is a very big flaw. Solving it may have already happened. If done properly the physical experience for me will be amazing. The other major flaw is that the story line for movie I saw was very shallow for a 90's audience. The big test will be the STAR TREK movie. I think it will work. When this level of entertainment is added to IMAX's present approach to 'documentaries' I think audiences will line up like they never did before. Sorry if I got on a soap box there, but I'm very excited by every aspect of 3D-IMAX JimBo
