Another way to look at it is that there was never a country called Israel until 1948. As you yourself said, it was called Palestine for 2000 years. That's where the term "Palestinian" comes from. It refers to people who live in or are from Palestine.

As a matter of fact, there really weren't many Jews in Palestine from before Christ until the 1920's. They started to emigrate there in large numbers from other parts of the world at that time.

I do not condone the terrorist tactics of the extremist Palestinians. The terrorist are the enemies of most Palestinians as much as they are enemies of Israel.

Nonetheless, there's no reason that Israelis have more of an intrinsic right to that land than the Palestinians do.

Just my opinion.
