Shafik, Why were those initial explorations not followed up? Of course we will never know this.
As to the contributions of muslims to America it was sad that it was as a slave trade by other muslims who were the traders who actually did the capturing and trafficking. This does not in any way clean the hands of the USA slave traders, but it does show that they were not the leaders in this trade as they would not have been able to attack Africa and take slaves against the enormous numerical superiority of the local africans.

Most of the other references chronical a decline from the heyday around 900-1000 AD.
What caused this decline.? There seems to be some effort at revisionary activity to make the arab contribution in later years as good or better than the early work. In fact it is a shadow of the early work. At the beginning the arabs led in virtually all areas of science....why did this stop? why is it stopped today?
Now the oil kingdoms are funding some fundamental research as well as a lot of development work, but to this day the arabs spend far more on war than on research into science. Is it because warlike stuff has the support of the clergy because if they conquer other lands the mass of people under the control of the clergy will increase???
Why are arabs so hell bent of warring with each other and with israel?

Bill
