If something would not be bound to happen, then we should't be concerned about it. What we should be concerned is about a likely outcome. That because we would be influenced by it.

Let's say that the likelyhood that we will be hit by a family-sized asteroid is negligible, -say one every 4.5 nbillion years, which means we have already had one, and it is most likely to have another hit in the next 4.5 billion year- we wouldn't have the govs, scientists, and insurance companies (not to mention the Rev. Jones et al) worrying about it.
