I was in Japan a couple of years ('69-'71) while in Uncle Sam's boat club (Navy). Enjoyed Tokyo & Yokohama!
I suppose governments have to support and (probably) mandate changes where there are monopolies in local service. We still have that situation in my area. I have a choice of one telephone company and that is it! They know it, too!! :(
There needs to be some way for companies to share the cost of establishing the communication links (I mean fast, efficient, effective, high quality links) to houses, businesses, etc. so that from then on it is available to companies for a reasonable fee. I think something like what was done with in developing the internet might work in establishing a national (and, if we can cooperate between nations, world-wide) communications network. Maybe more involvement by businesses would be appropriate, but it might be possible.
I suppose we would have to establish this communication network before we can have something like Peter Cochrane talks about and be able to take full advantage of it. Could it be that Japan may be, in many ways, like the US in that they have an established communication system that is difficult and/or slow to change?
