I had thought that perhaps Iraqi shia's thought that the USA would continue on to Baghdad and remove sadam and were not aware the the UN was calling the shots and stopped the war when Kuwait was liberated..... Just my opinion though.

Back then I too thought we should have gone to Baghdad and dumped Saddam. The reason Bush Sr. gave for not doing so was because the UN authorization did not allow that... but I have no doubt that Bush could have interpreted the UN resolution differently.

Various sources including Bush Sr. himself have indicated that Bush Sr. fully expected Saddam to be overthown by parties within Iraq, making a march to Baghdad unnecessary.

Furthermore, Bush didn't want another Viet Nam at any cost - to be "occupiers in a hostile land" as he put it in his book.
