I think the Republicans have overplayed what they perceive to be an opportunity that not only will it result in a Democrat Governor in California but a generation of Republican haters for the foreseeable future. This is true at least in my own case. From being basically not very political at all, I have begun posting anti-Republican posts on bulletin boards. When fanaticism takes over a party, ordinary citizens like me respond.
