Mel, I got a quick rundown on KIWE this week, so I will try to answer some of your questions. As I understand it, KIWE is a stand-alone browser. It comes with a database of approved web sites, which can be updated by HTSF, or by parents/teachers (password access required). Unlike Netscape or Microsoft browser, there is no URL line. Content is searched by menus and submenus, which not only provides control, but also organizes the search in a user-friendly manner (instead of showing 14 million "hits" and making the child sort through them). In addition, there are other levels of security built in. If an "approved" site is taken over by say, 'Naked Commies for Satan', a language filter would deny access to that site. There are other filtering features, but I'm not sure how they will work. I can tell you, this looks like a 'killer app' for the school market! As to competition, forget it. Sure Microsoft could develop something like this, but by the time they could get it to market, KIWE would be the standard. One of Heartsoft's strengths is there ability to produce high-quality software quickly. As to existing screening software, I believe this product will blow them away, it's that much better. All MHO, of course. Hope this helps, Best Wishes, John Rowe |
