Dorine, The PC manufacturers don't report sales to the research companies. IDC, Dataquest, Gartner, et. al. have to do their own research and estimates which is why the estimates vary from research house to research house. At best, the research houses might call a Compaq or Dell person and tell them what they're estimating to see if their numbers get gagged on (which rarely happens if they're overestimating the numbers).
