We gotta do something...

Common Sense and Wonder

Sometimes thoughts go by so quickly that we don't take the time to savor them and reflect on a broader meaning.

I think sir Bob Geldof's insightful comment, quoted below, about Live8 is one such enlightening event. By saying that
"Something must be done, even if it doesn't work."
he has to my mind given a motto to the Left, including Democrats, socialists, environmental and social justice types.

Look a the policies advocated by these folk.

It isn't necessary that what they propose work.

It's the intention that counts.

And, of course the good intentions make them feel superior and absolves them from actually having to think within the confines of economic or scientific reality... the rallying cry is "just do it".

So, if increasing aid to Africa actually deepens the continent's poverty, as an African economist said a few days ago (posted here on July 6), it is ignored by the Left because it doesn't fit their template. And that template requires that we do something even if it doesn't work otherwise how will they assuage the ravaging guilt that afflicts them.

Propose that Africa eliminate tariff's between their countries and you will be greeted by a shocked look. No, no.

It's America's fault and we must PAY to fix it.

These interstate duties are one of the major generators of continent-wide corruption. Look at how much the African thugocracies spend on military hardware and ask a Liberal why they need the stuff and you'll be greeted with, it's the west's fault.

The Left's template is based on reparations not solving problems.
