Joni Ernst’s (R-Iowa) approval rating has fallen 10 points from a high just more than a year ago, although a plurality of voters still say they would back her reelection, according to a new Des Moines Register poll. The poll found the senator’s approval falling from 57 percent in February 2019 to 47 percent. The poll found 79 percent of Republicans approve of her performance as senator, compared to 45 percent of independents and 14 percent of Democrats. Just more than 4 in 10 likely voters — 41 percent — said they would definitely back her reelection, while 31 percent would definitely vote for someone else and 20 percent could consider voting for someone else. Ernst, who is up for reelection in November, is a key target for Democrats seeking to regain control of the Senate. The Democratic primary for the seat is set for June 2 and features several challengers, including retired Navy Adm. Michael Franken, businessman Eddie Mauro, businesswoman Theresa Greenfield and attorney Kimberly Graham. None of their names were recognizable to a majority of respondents in the new survey. Pollsters surveyed 800 Iowa adults, 667 of them likely voters, from March 2 to March 5. The results have a 3.5 percentage point margin of error overall and a 3.8 percentage point margin of error for likely voters.
