I had always wrongly thought he did horse whisperer and bridges of madison county stuff.

So did I, until I picked up a copy of "No County for Old Men." I read "The Road" in one sitting, staying up until 4:00 a.m. in order to finish it (an event, alas, that is becoming increasingly rare as I age). I will readily admit that I have a weakness for apocalyptic themed novels, and "The Road" paints one of the bleakest visions of the future that I have ever encountered. The novel is so powerful that about forty pages into the book I started to have serious doubts that I could handle the ending. Without giving anything away, let me say that the ending was perfect. Oprah deserves a lot of credit for ensuring that this book gets a wide audience.
