In Italy they don't let the people in except 1 by 1 and thus keeping the stores fairly empty thus matching the fairly short cashier lines.
That said, with each customer having a well filled cart, the cashier time per customer also is quite long, all of which create long entry lines outside the store.
No problem with the currently fair weather, but imagine that turning bad ...
