This is so predictable. If they can't get back and forth, they stay.

As for SS checks -- it's so easy to get fake SS numbers. If you use an SS number from someone who died young and never collected benefits, how is anybody going to know? Especially if you move from job to job a lot.

I got married in 1985, and started using my husband's last name without ever changing my name with Social Security. It took them 17 years to catch up to me and demand that I go to the Social Security office to change my records officially. And it was such a hassle that I put it off until they threatened to withhold my tax refund because the name didn't match my SS#.
