IBM takes Microdrive to 1GB

IBM has boosted its Microdrive line to include a one gig drive.

In the storage per square inch stakes, the Microdrive ranks in top ten per cent
of all IBM's storage products. It will sell for around $500.

The matchbook sized drive is destined for the digital camera market which will
for about a third of shipments. A similar volume is likely to be sold for use as
backup storage for notebook and desktop computers.

IBM is pushing hard to get the drive into the hand-held and wearable
computing device markets. The drive is built to withstand a 1500G shock,
according to a company spokesman, and will come with tiny rubber bumpers
to improve reliability.

The drive has already been incorporated into one miniature PC. Tiquit
Computers has built a 5 cubic inch computer, called the Matchbox PC
weighing in at a mere 3.3 ounces. However, you don't get many inches for
your money: the computer is retailing at $1495.©
