My mother-in-law was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2002.

After 3 weeks in the hospital and 4 weeks in a rehab hospital, she was discharged and went into an adult group home. She lived one more year, and the majority of the cost of the rehab and the group home was paid by her AARP long term care insurance. I believe the cost was about $5,000/month.

The other item to think about is medi-gap insurance, that picks up the part of bills that medicare does not. That can potentially be a huge benefit.
