I pray that there isn't a backlash in this country against so-called "foreigners." My mother, who is a liberal, called me tonight to tell me that while she was buying a battery-operated radio, two "suspicious-looking" men, whom she described as short, swarthy, and speaking in an accent, bought four police-band scanner type radios, and took them out into the parking lot, where they were met by two other men of the same description.
My own thought is that these are people who are either US citizens or legal residents, who are scared to death that they will be lynched.
CNN reporting that perhaps as many as 800 were killed in the attack on the Pentagon. Many, if not most, of the people killed lived in my own community, Northern Virginia. We pride ourselves on being a community of people from many nations, who live together in peace. I expect to find out later today that some of the people who were killed were parents of children my kids go to school with, maybe even my own neighbors.
My own anger is part of what makes me afraid, because I would not harm someone who did not try to harm me or mine first, but others do not have that brake on hostile impulses. |
