I think you'd really like acrylics. Lately I've been using them just as you would pure watercolors. You can build up layers of color, as many layers as you like, without having the new layer remove any of the underlying layers. As long as the new layer goes on top of a dry layer you can do this all day.

If you're really interested in this approach, pick up a book by Charles Harrington called "Acrylics, The Watercolor Alternative".

Amazon has some used copies for about $14. I have the book and the instruction DVD. Good place to start.

Hugh Greer is another wonderful acrylics painter. Good instruction tapes from him as well.
