Great read, Steve.
By the way, IBM has a really cool patent database at...
patent.womplex.ibm.com
By clicking on the image icon you can actually view the complete patent, including diagrams. Hugh, you may want to take a look at the following patents:
Keepered media-related patents:
#4,985,795 (1987, Gooch), #5,041,922 (1991, Gooch+Wood+Niedermayer)
Also of interest are the MR-related patents:
#3,883,858 (1973) - MR readout transducer for sensing magnetic domains in thin film memories
#4,356,523 (1980) - narrow track MR transducer assembly
#4,623,867 (1984) - permanent magnet-based narrow track MR transducer
Since Ampex claims that it invented MR recording in 1968 there must be some other patents involved. The IBM demonstration database, though, only has patents issued since 1971. Also, only patents issued since 1987 have the image files currently online. |
