Keepered media-related patents:

#4,985,795 (1987, Gooch), #5,041,922 (1991, Gooch+Wood+Niedermayer)

Also of interest are the MR-related patents:

#3,883,858 (1973) - MR readout transducer for sensing magnetic domains in thin film memories

#4,356,523 (1980) - narrow track MR transducer assembly

#4,623,867 (1984) - permanent magnet-based narrow track MR transducer

Since Ampex claims that it invented MR recording in 1968 there must be some other patents involved. The IBM demonstration database, though,
only has patents issued since 1971. Also, only patents issued since 1987 have the image files currently online.
