Since whitening of teeth is usually not covered by insurance plans, the patients will be given a choice of paying $1000 for laser treatment or $400 for a bleach kit. Why would a patient pay a $600 premium for a laser treatment? Why should a dentist take a risk of buying a $40K laser machine when he makes no investment to order a bleaching kit?

I can understand why universities and hospitals would buy the PLSIA lasers, but most one-man dentists make their money on crowns, cavities and bridgework which are procedures which can't be done at home by the patient like bleaching can. These dentists only work 40-50 hours per week, so they can maximize their profits by using their chair time to generate revenue which must be done in the office. Bleaching can generate profits without using up valuable chair time.
