Apples vs. Wintel in schools.

From the MacWorld BBS:

>Apple no longer teacher's pet
By Reuters - February 3, 1997, 4 p.m. PT

Personal computers running Windows software from Microsoft (MSFT) surpassed Apple Computer's (AAPL) Macintosh as the favored computer in grade schools, a report by a market researcher revealed today.

About 56 percent of the new computers bought during the 1996-97 school year will run Windows software, according to a survey by International Data Corporation/LINK in New York.

Having called the agency who put this on the news wire(Marcy Monyek & Assoc 415-846-5401) and inquiring about how this data was obtained, this is what I found. First off the report is simply not true, yes in some sholls(rural communities) Wintel computers had increased plans for purchase. However in the segment of data released the report makes no reference as to how these schools were chosen and only included 5,661 computer units to be purchased.

What the report did not mention(for reasons unknown), as that when schools districts were surveyed the results indicated Apple computers comprised 55.4 vs. 40.6%(Wintel) of computers to be purchased. This envolved the purchase of 40,528 computer units to be purchased. Eight times the amount the segment reported to the press. Apple still holds the majority of planned computer purchases in urban and suburban districts in some cases as high as 71.1 to 28.9% versus Wintel computers. What the report also didn't say was that even Apple's aging OS is still considered easier to use than Windows 95. What is more important is, how can we get this type of information out to the public and help restore consumer confidence?

Any suggestions?
