Japan Net Surfers Seen Surging -- Dataquest

TOKYO - The number of Internet users in Japan is expected surge to 33 million by 2001 from 4.6 million in 1996, global
market researcher Dataquest said on Thursday.

Dataquest said Japan's Internet users would reach eight million before the end of 1997.

"The Internet market will expand from business users into a greater number of individual users," Shinichiro Wakahara,
Dataquest analyst, said.

"The increase of individual Internet users will raise the importance of Internet content services," Wakahara said.

With the rapid growth of Japan's Internet market, shipments of personal computer (PC) servers are also expected rise,
Dataquest said.

The research firm predicted that annual shipments of PC servers in Japan would increase to 395,452 units in 2001 from
113,621 units in 1996. Annual growth rates in the 1996-2001 period will average 28.3 percent, it said.

The value of the shipments in 2001 will total 406.0 billion yen, up from 132.9 billion yen in 1996, it said.
