(We missed this from last Friday)Telekom Cellular and Nokia sign agreement for delivery of complete GSM 1800 cellular network in Malaysia
(December 4, 1998) - Nokia and Telekom Cellular have signed a contract for the supply of a complete GSM 1800 mobile network for Telekom Cellular, one of the leading mobile operators in Malaysia, part of the Telekom Malaysia group.
The multiyear contract is valued at over USD 50 million. Installation of the network will begin immediately in high density areas of Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor area. The agreement includes Nokia's Mobile Switching Centres, Home Location Registers, Base Station Controllers, Base Stations and the Nokia Network Management System.
"With this addition to our digital network, TMTOUCH's customers will benefit in terms of wider network coverage as well as the introduction of the latest value-added services," said Mr. Wan Muhamad Wan Ibrahim, CEO of Telekom Cellular.

Telekom Cellular was set up in September 1996 and its service TMTOUCH was launched later in the same year. Telekom Cellular is part of the Telekom Malaysia Group, the country's leading telecommunications operator. TMTOUCH's subscriber base has greatly increased from 9,000 subscribers in September 1996 to 195,000 subscribers as of November this year.
With this co-operation, the number of operators to which Nokia supplies GSM technology increases to 77 operators in 37 countries. Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.
