"Press Patterns
Social Security Coverage Mixed

The Washington Post’s report on the House Republicans’ Social Security compromise is pretty good, especially compared to the New York Times. The Times opens its story with this:

Influential Republicans offered a sketchy proposal on Wednesday that would use the cash surplus the Social Security system is running nowadays to finance private investment accounts, in an effort to neutralize the political opposition to a fundamental change in the system.

So the proposal is “sketchy,” eh? The Times also reports:

[The Republicans] offered no clue about how accounts would be financed when Social Security was no longer running a surplus, but the implicit view was that politicians would be under great political pressure to find some other means of paying for them.

The Post found a supporter of private accounts to offer a clue:

"When the program is up and running, Congress will be faced with decisions whether to borrow, raise taxes or cut spending, which is what we should be faced with," [Rep. Paul] Ryan [(R-WI)] said.

The Post story quotes sources from two lefty think tanks opposing the plan and only House Republicans supporting it (oddly enough, the same two lefty think-tank guys show up in the LA Times report as well), but other than that it’s a fair treatment. Of course, for much better analysis read Pfeiffer and Hunter and Kerpen on NRO today."
