I am one of the early adopters for CD-RW and I thought I would pass on what I have learned so far. I bought a Memorex EIDE drive model CRW-1622 and I am really pleased with everything about it. Memorex included a fully version of software that does copying and backup in all formats and this software has been fully supported with continuing upgrades that are free off the Memorex website. I am using an old 486 DX2 66 computer and I have no problems copying at 1X speed. 2X can be problematic; it works sometimes and bombs out others. I found a great free 1x audio copying program at www.padus.com that is the best audio copying program. You do need about 1 gig of free space to do it though, unless you have a CD-ROM drive as well that the www.padus.com program supports fully. A Plexor SCSI CD-ROM seems to be the favored source drive for this purpose. Anyhow, the CRW-1622 Memorex CD-RW drive has been excellently supported and has flash firmware updates that continuously improve the drives performance. I just am thrilled with this technology. I have bought HI-VAL blank disks for under one dollar from Comp USA and have CD backups now that are tremendously superior to my old tape backups that were slow as hell to use. The drive is also supported in all of the best CD programs; Adaptec's Easy CD Deluxe which is an excellent program; CD Architech by Sonic Foundry, Win On CD, etc. The kicker is that the drive is only $299. at Comp USA. There is a new model that will record at double the rate. The CRW-1622 has 1 meg. of buffer and that works great.
