PK,, I heard on the radio tonight of how bin laden came to be.. Very quickly--- The US wanted the Russians out of Afghanistan - The clever way they did this was to encourage Islamic groups to fight Russia and chase them out. - The CIA worked through the Pakistani SIS to provide the training and equipment for the Muslim factions to fight the Russians - This was financed by the "Golden Crescent" ,, an area between Pakistan and Afghanistan that grows all the poppies for the production of heroin, ( 500 billion a years worth) - Bin Laden apparently was unaware that he was being backed by the CIA, and thought it to be the Pakistani SIS... Apparently this heroin trade has also been used to fund other groups like the KLA, and the Bosnians When the US was asked about this rapidly growing area of poppy growth they answered that they could not cover all the bases.
