By the time the standards are "harmonized" and the carriers come up with a profitable plan for UMTS, we will see who is the leader in 3G.

Yes, it should be interesting to observe the proceedings.. However, IF the standard was based on Qualcomm's original requirements of a single unified standard based on QCOM's definitions.. Then there would be "no doubt" who the leader in 3G would be!

Qualcomm transitioned from a position of "absolute power" in CDMA, to a top tier manufacture of Asics and IPR.. This transition in power is what happened in TDMA with MOT in the early days! And was the intent of WCDMA.. To remove Qualcomm from it's position of "absolute power"

Some company creates a new technology.. They maintain absolute control over that technology... Then little by little, "through standardization bodies and processes" the power is reduced, by including externally held IPR into the evolution of the standard.. Like GSM did to TDMA!
