"I hope you don't believe that pulling out even as the militant extremists pour in to do their terrorist deeds gives us a better chance at anything but defeat."

I hope you dont mean that we will be fighting in iraq 10 years from now exactly as we are now like the movie ground hog day? Both alternatives would be defeats imo just like in vietnam. You know in a three state solution where 2 of the 3 are reasonably secure, would leave the sunni triangle as the terrorist sewer that would try to destabliize the other two states as well as other states in the mideast not to mention being a new terror center for global terrorism. In that case, we could/should carpet bomb them without regard to civilian casualties just as we did to nazi germany and japan in WW2. Then mop up.
Certainly we hope it doesnt go that far or in that direction but this country has numerous options but you wouldnt know any of that by listening to bush last night. I heard biden yelling this morning that "We must win in iraq and we should send in more troops to do the job." I am not a military tactician but i think biden is probably right. Send in more troops, fight like hell, & make demands on the iraq regime both politicially and in terms of securing their own country with milestones/timetables.
Iraq should not be an open ended committment because if it is so the regime is not incented enough to make the hard decisions. After all this is done, expect the worse and pray for the best. Our homefront will never support an open ended committment in iraq so lets take our best shot.
If you were a general and you accepted or was forced by the pols to accept my premise about the homefront not holding up, how would you fight this war in iraq with a two year time framework?? One thing bush, biden, you and me want to do is to have iraq be successful. It is not whether but how best to achieve that aim given the realities of the situation. Dismissing folks like me and biden as liberals misses the point.
