Vodafone backs off from multimedia services

Vodafone may go back to basics with its marketing for mobile services, distancing itself from efforts based on delivering entertainment and applications to mobile devices.

According to an internal presentation seen by EETimes, the company aims to concentrate on user-to-user comms and build up the use of messaging and voice calls, promoting a youth-oriented brand already being established by advertising.

The company sees direct communications between mobile users as the core strength of its technology, as opposed to multicast entertainment and similar data services.

The company hopes that older customers, characterised as resisting using their phones, will be encouraged more by their children.

The move looks gloomy for third generation network use and the market for devices. A number of the handset makers have built 3G designs around a perceived demand for multimedia services.
