Intel Chip Shortage Threatens Supply of Servers, Paper Says
Santa Clara, California, Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) -- A shortage of Intel Corp. microprocessors is crimping the supply of costly server computers, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site, citing industry executives.
Intel said it has experienced unexpected heavy demand for the Pentium III Xeon processor, and is boosting production. The chip helps run servers, powerful computers that can store large amounts of data and operate Web sites.
Intel chip shortages have already affected supply of personal computers. Now, the Xeon shortage is hurting the supply of server computers costing $15,000 or more, the newspaper said.
Melinda Jones, a vice president at computer distributor Ingram Micro Inc., said shortages are affecting all the company's key suppliers, the Journal said.
