exactly...the officially reported p/e's are not comparable to those of the past, before the new era of accounting shenanigans began.

note in connection with this, that tech cos. wanted their market speculation gains included in earnings while the mania was still in full swing, but now that those gains have turned to losses, they are of course "exceptional items".
