UNTO THE LEAST OF THESE

3 a.m.
on a bitter cold night
Found me tired
drive'in home
Wearily attacking
my predestined path
Knowing I'd lose
to sleep at last

I approached an object
looming in the night
With icy, iron tressles,
a skeletal sight
As I searched for rest
my eyes saw clear
A ghostly glow
dancing on the bridge

Proceeding to cross,
in the middle, I stopped
I cut my lights
and began to watch
The eerie white image
shining on the beams
No longer did linger
my reckless dreams

Glancing down river
to a clearing of trees
A small fire's shadow
balleted with the breeze
And there huddling the flames
the figure of a man
A displaced face
homeless bound

I wondered of him
as he cuddled the heat
Where was he going
what was his name
How cruel the world
like an unwanted dog
His hell . . . alive
his heaven far off

I could only imagine
his thoughts, unknown
Twas not for a woman
but a morsel of food
And maybe a warm place
out of the cold
Maybe love
could heal OUR souls

My mind now alert
I started my car
And I could see HIM
the MAN on the cross
I felt HIS eyes
looking down at me
CHEEKS, tear stained;
I traveled on.
