JPR:

I see what you are trying to say about Alaska and California, but historically the facts are very very different regarding the accession of those territories into the US then the accession of Kashmir into India.

Neither territory (Alaska or California) was already occupied much by either country (Russia sold Alaska to us) and while we acquired California from Mexico as a result of the Mexcian War we would have taken it anyway by the waves of immigrants who were heading that way--which would have overwhelmed the relatively few Mexicans holding large ranches there (Mexico is about to get its revenge as the "Chicano" population in California is about to wrest politcal control of a number of Southern California Counties from us gringos).

So I don't think it is accurate to compare this to Kashmir which was a both a funcioning government and culture already in existence when India acquired it.

Secondly, becasue Pakistan is so desparate it makes it very very dangerous. With little to lose it may well decide to turn loose its terror brigades if India will not accomodate it politcally. It is in India's interest to achieve some means of coming to settlement with Pakistan over Kashmir.

You, to me, are trying to make India appear to be in the "moral" right by championing the fact that it is a democracy and Pakistan is not. This has little to do with the root of the dispute IMHO and is not going to solve anything. (Just look at the Israeli's and Palestinians).

The focus ought to be on how to get these two countries talking directly with one another.
