The shrinkage number is not being paid attention to...but what we must follow are those employed.
U-6 Total unemployed, plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force

17.3 16.2

In bold above, the 17.3 represent from BLS, number unemployed in January 2011.
The 16.2 represents those unemployed in 2012.

Take the 1.2 million removed from the numbers and we do not see job growth. The trend of increased employment has increased each spring for the last two years and then jobs diminished. Hopefully this year will be different.
