If there is any good reason for a robust space program, Deep Impact showed us. Nasa hit a comet with an 800 pound copper slug. That could've been a nuke meant to divert "Lucifer's Hammer".

I see that the Nasa "Exploration Systems Architecture Study" study is sensible, too. Nasa should have gone this route 30 years ago, instead of the shuttle. The heavy lifter potentially can lob more into orbit than Saturn V...
