the Taurus is an interesting case--it was the last successful passenger vehicle developed by an American car company. unfortunately, Ford got distracted by its high-margin SUVs and let the Taurus run to pot. by contrast, the Japanese companies don't neglect their established product lines; they keep improving the old standbys (Corrola, Camry, Accord, etc.) year after year even as they tackle new niches.

if you have some spare time in the bookstore, take a look at "The End of Detroit". it's a sad tale of the pathetic, greedy US auto industry, a mighty contrast to the humble approach of continual improvement used by the Japanese.
