Hiram, I feel sort of sad here because I think you were looking for answers, and even though some of us gave our opinions, I don't think we really helped you. I am not a particularly materialistic person, and I don't think you are either, but I would have to agree with Father Terrence that if you are pretty happy anyway, more money is better than less, just because you can have more fun. I totally agree with you that the pursuit of money can be really empty, and if you are not happy in the first place, more money will not help you.

I think the only thing I can say is--are you sure that what you are remembering about being in college and not really having much money, and yet being really happy is not more about that very intense and special time of life, rather than your financial circumstances? I know that it was for me. And when you say life is short, and there are many things you want to do before you go, it sounds to me like you want to lead a VERY rich life, and I cannot imagine you limiting yourself by choosing welfare. It seems to me like maybe there is more that you are feeling sad or trapped about somehow than the money issue. If I could make a wish for you, it would be for a relaxed, long vacation somewhere in nature, where you could get some perspective on all these things you are thinking about, because you sound tired and upset, like you could use some time off.

I hope things work out well for you!!!
