Well, Janet, I thought Selena was a very interesting, bright and strong person. She was only in her early twenties when she died, and yet she had gone into designing clothes and marketing them, along with being the star in a tejano band. Her family was very nurturing and close, which is something I really respect, and the band was made up of her brothers and her husband.
Tejano music is interesting in that it is a combination of Mexican influences and accordions, which as I remember were brought to Texas by central European settlers. Even though Selena had already made it financially, and could afford to live anywhere, she chose to live next door to her parents in a segretated, Mexican neighborhood. She was very kind hearted, and accessible to her fans. The reason she died that day is that the manager of her clothing stores was stealing money from her, and although her male relatives had offered to handle the situation for her, Selena wanted to confront the woman herself, talk to her, and fire her on a one-to-one, direct basis. Unfortunately, the woman was desperate, and mentally ill, and shot Selena to death.
This was also very interesting in that Selena was becoming rapidly more prominent, and making the transition to a wider, American market for her songs. This would have brought a wide prominence to Tejano music, and perhaps a better understanding between two cultures. So for many reasons, her death was a tragedy, a total waste of a lovely person who was doing good in the world. |
