Dell Announces Alliance With Giganet forHigh-Speed Interconnect Technology May 10, 1999 09:21 AM ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 1999--
Provides Customers Building Block for Developing Highly Scalable System Area Networks With Dell(R) PowerEdge(R) Servers
Dell Computer Corporation DELL , the world's leading direct computer systems company, today announced it has entered into a technology alliance with Giganet(R) Corporation, a leading developer of high-speed computer interconnect products to enhance the scalability and performance of clustered servers.
Dell plans to offer Giganet's high-speed cluster switch and host adapters with its PowerEdge servers to help improve the performance and availability of interconnected systems. The capability will allow Dell, the No. 2 server vendor in the United States and No. 4 worldwide(a), to help customers build highly scalable Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R)-based system area network solutions using Dell PowerEdge server and PowerVault(tm) storage products.
"Dell's work with Giganet is very strategic in the development of system area network solutions, which will bring together our PowerEdge server and PowerVault storage products to tackle high-performance computing tasks typically associated with more expensive, proprietary systems," said Michael Lambert, senior vice president of Dell's Enterprise Systems Group.
"These solutions will enable customers to migrate business-critical computing jobs, such as online transaction processing, inventory control and financial applications, to industry-standard systems."
System area networks are collections of clustered servers interconnected to groups of storage systems, all working together to provide a high level of application availability, system performance and flexibility. Performance can be increased when clusters are configured to run the same application, dividing the work among individual servers in the cluster. Improved system availability levels can be achieved through failover clustering, which refers to two or more connected servers that run separate applications but have the ability to take over the role of other servers in the event of a system failure.
"This agreement with Dell allows us to provide our mutual customers with a powerful, packaged solution that meets the highest standards of system availability and reliability," said Neil Ferris, CEO of Giganet. "Dell's industry-leading PowerEdge family clustered with our cLAN(tm) interconnects represents an industry standard solution to scale mission-critical applications."
Today's announcement follows a similar agreement Dell reached with NuView for its NuView's ClusterX software. Dell plans to also use ClusterX as a key part of its system area network solutions for the management of clustered PowerEdge servers. ClusterX helps users install, configure, monitor, diagnose, manage, respond to and administer systems running Microsoft Cluster Server software.
Dell plans to offer products from both Giganet and NuView with its systems later this year.
