Elizabeth, I regret to say that I have no cure for putzlessness.
As to gold and quartz being attracted.......
If you take gasoline and water they form two layers. One 99.999% water and .001% gasoline and the other vice versa.
If I drop in a water based dye the water will color mostly and the oil a little and the opposite if I drop in an oil based dye. Some dyes dissovle in both or in varying proportions. The same hapens with assorted melted rocks and dissolved gasses and metals. Gold is not very soluble in basalt.....1-2 parts per billion. Gold is far more soluble in a hot fluid made of quartz dissolved in water with CO2..SO@ etc so as this fluid percolates through the ground it removes the gold from the basalt and concentrates it in the fluid....like the water based dirt you can wash off your clother with detergent but the oil based dirt takes a solvent(dry) cleaner. we are talking long time scales here, million-billions of years. In time you will have half the gold in a billion tons of basalt extracted into a million tons of quartz veins...and now instead of 1-2 PPB is gets to be 1-2 PPM a 1000 fold increase in concentration. BTW...all basalt has 1-2PPB of gold. Now if the quartz was only 100,000 tons...even more PPM of gold. As the hot fluid get to the surface the CO2 evaporates....just like soda water and the water cools and quartz and gold will no longer dissolve in it and they cover the rocks where this happens. It may be a small % gold and quartz in the water...but they have millions of years to do it.
