Capturing or controlling Afghanistan is not only extremely difficult, as Alexander the Great, Ghengis Khan, the Brits, and the Soviets found, but also unnecessary to the problem of terrorism. Khandahar has a nice airport -- we should know, since we built it -- which could be occupied and serve as a forward base from which to run raids against suspected terrorist camps. We could do that until late October, then leave for the winter, and return in the spring when the swallows and terrorists return. We hit and run, occupy only when the weather and conditions are in our favor, and disturb the terrorist operations so that they can not have a safe harbor. And, should we be lucky enough to run into a bin Laden or a hidden cache of NBC material, we take it out by whatever means are necessary.
