Advanced Micro Devices Fires Latest Salvo In Dual-Core Duel With Intel

.................AMD (NYSE:AMD - News) -- second fiddle to No. 1 chipmaker Intel (NasdaqNM:INTC - News) -- looks to plant the first flag in the dual-core field. It unveiled its dual-core road map Monday and said it was ready to start early production. Intel, though less vocal about its plans, appears to be at a similar stage................

Analyst Dean McCarron at Mercury Research in Scottsdale, Ariz., says Intel may be further along than it's letting on. It often keeps its new technology close to the vest.

In the past, Intel led in innovations, and AMD followed. That's changing now, he says. It's definitely a two-horse race.

"Both companies have been thinking in this general direction. And both plan to deliver products in roughly the same time frame," McCarron said. "It's an indicator that they are competing directly with each other now."......................

AMD says it's reached three key objectives. First, it has a working design of a dual-core chip. Second, it plans to ship such chips next year. Third, plans for a new chip plant in Dresden, Germany, are proceeding well. "We're well beyond breaking ground. We are ahead of schedule," Seyer said. That plant will make the dual-core chips.

..........Dual-core chips are just the beginning, Seyer says. Look for chipmakers to quickly follow with chips with four, eight and more cores.

Sun, in addition to mulling AMD's chips, is designing multiprocessor versions of its Sparc chip. A version due out next year should have eight cores, says Insight 64's Brookwood.

EDIT: This is only one journalistic/trade paper piece of the dozens already out in a few hours since the PR announcement. I don't recall so many news reprots or articles, so quickly on a single PR.
