It's somewhat ironic that those that have argued for the expansion of government to redistribute wealth and help the poor have more or less handed all the power over to the corporations and wealthy.
Wall St. and corporations are not stupid.
Every time government is expanded, they make sure it is expanded in a way that benefits them regardless of whether it's to fight a war, provide health care, or do anything else. The rich and connected pay all the taxes, so they will ensure they get that money back.
The end result has been 50% of the population (give or take) is poor and pays no taxes, Wall ST, major corporations, and their shareholders keep getting richer and richer, and everyone else is getting fucked in the ass while moving towards that 50%.
Instead of having a system where one man has one vote and each vote counts the same, we have a system where each dollar has a vote. The more you have, the more taxes you pay, so the more power you have. But the only reason that the case is because there are trillions of dollars up for grabs in the government.
